The One: Experience Jesus | The Helper
“I will ask the Father to send you another Helper, the Spirit of truth, who will remain constantly with you. The world does not know the Spirit and is unable to receive Him. But you do know the Spirit because He lives with you, and He will dwell in you. I will never abandon you like orphans; I will return to be with you.” John 14:16-18 The Voice
The thought that we have a constant person with us, the Helper, this Spirit of truth, is quite surreal if you think about it. Wherever you are and go as a follower of Jesus you have been given the Holy Spirit to help you. You have to ask why God would give us a Helper in the first place and what does the Holy Spirit do to help us?
We need to know the nature of this constant companion in order to live in unison with Him. If God decided we needed a helper, it’s because we need help. In the dictionary it describes ‘help’ as to “make it easier or possible for (someone) to do something by offering them one's services or resources” and “improve (a situation or problem); be of benefit to.” Beyond this, our Helper is also “the Spirit of truth.” We need this because we also have an enemy who is known as the prince of lies. If Satan hasn’t kept you from entering into a relationship with Jesus, his next goal is to keep you from fully experiencing the truth that keeps you free and fulfilling your God-given potential.
When we become followers of Jesus, we bring with us a lot of misconceptions and lies we’ve learned from the world over the years. The Spirit is there to replace that with His truth, and we learn that as God is unchanging, what we believe in our every day lives must line up with His word. Understanding the truth of the gospel softens our hearts towards Him, and allows us to experience the relationship He died and rose again to have with us. It’s a daily building project, one where the foundations are not made of opinion or feelings, but of truth.

Q. Do you remember a mind-set you had when you first became a Christian that you later found to be false? What was it and what was the truth?
Q. What’s another function of the Holy Spirit that you feel He helps you with?
Q. Give an example that you have seen of soft and hard hearts. How do these affect one’s openness to God, and how do you go about changing the hardness of your heart?
We all have areas of weakness that need repair through the truth of who we are as adopted children of God. What is that area for you? What is the lie you find there? And what is the truth that you need to remind yourself of?
